Installing and Using the Shrew Soft VPN Client

NOTE: We are currently beta testing the Shrew Soft VPN client since it seems to work well on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows systems. Please follow the instructions on our Contact Us page if you encounter any problems.

Step 1: Exit from all Windows applications before installation. You will need to reboot after the installation is complete.

Step 2: Download the client installation package with the Run option.

Step 3: Allow the installation program to run.

Step 4: Click Next.

Step 5: Read the license agreement, then click I Agree to accept it, or click Cancel to refuse the terms and exit the setup.

Step 6: Choose software components to install, then click Next.

Step 7: Choose the destination folder for the software, then click Next.

Step 8: Click Continue Anyway when prompted with a window like the one below during this installation.

Step 9: Click Finish to exit the installation program.

Step 10: Restart the computer.

Step 11: Open a Web browser to https://ftp.ucsb.edu/private/secured/vpn/beta.

Step 12: Right-click on UCSB.vpn and select Save Target As.... Take note of where you save the file, since you will need to find it again during the next step.

Step 13: Go to the Windows Start menu and select All Programs > ShrewSoft VPN Client > Access Manager. The Access Manager will open.

Step 14: In the Access Manager, select File > Import to import the VPN profile downloaded during step 13 above.

Step 15: After the profile is imported, you'll see a new profile icon in the Access Manager window. To start a VPN connection, double-click on the profile icon.

Step 16: Enter your UCSBnetID and password as prompted.

A successful login will display a pop-up banner message.

The Connect button will change to Disconnect. When you are done using the VPN connection, click Disconnect in the connection dialog box.
